Welcome to Altura Park Horse Treks

We offer three different types of treks.

½ hour Mountain View Trek. A great trek with awesome views. You feel as if you’re on top of the world. A good trek for people with limited time who have ridden a couple of times. $50pp

1 hour Farm Trek. This is our most popular option. See our limestone rocks, cave, waterfall and patches of bush. Suitable for all levels of experience. $65pp

1 ½ hour Awesome Scenery Trek. Trek over hilltops and down through valleys with extensive 360 degree views over NZ’s stunning countryside. Wild turkeys, goats and other wild animals are often seen. $80pp

Most of our horses are good strong stationbred horses, bred for their strength and quietness. We ride in stock saddles. Safety helmets are provided. There are horses available for all types of riders, from first timers to the most experienced of riders.

All our gear is kept well maintained and clean. Our staff are well trained and always friendly and helpful. We are located only 4kms from Waitomo Caves.

All trekkers must be 12 years and over (for exceptions see below). They must also be able to speak and understand English. We have a weight limit of 100kg for the health and well-being of our horses as well as for the safety of our riders.

All trekkers get free entry to our Wildlife Park and Gardens.

What do I bring?

We supply the helmets - sizes up to 62cm. Please wear closed in shoes or boots that won’t fall off, we cannot let you ride in open toed shoes, sneakers/trainers/skate shoes with really fat tongues as they could get stuck in the stirrups, or loose shoes that will just fall off. Also, avoid bulky shoes or boots as they may not fit into the stirrups. For your comfort please wear full length, loose, flexible trousers. Make sure you wear warm clothing and bring along a rain coat or wind proof jacket incase of wind, rain or showers.

You are welcome to bring along a camera for the trek, we have pockets on some of our saddle blankets or wear a jacket with zip up pockets for essential items so that nothing gets lost.

Can I bring my own horse?

Check out the page called bring your horse

My children want to come to.

Due to the size of the horses, the contour of the farm and the wide open spaces, children must be at least 12 years old unless they have had a lot of experience then we may take them if they are aged 9+.

We now have a led trek option available for ages 8+

What times do the treks run at?

We don’t have set times, we are even happy to run treks outside our usual opening hours. You need to book though so you don’t miss out.

How many people go on the trek?

We don’t usually combine groups together; we will even take treks for just one person! The max number we take is between 3 & 5 depending on the levels of experience of the trekkers. For larger groups we offer back to back treks.

I’m a first time/beginner rider; can I come for a trek?

Yes as long as you are prepared to tell the horse what to do you can come trekking. We give you a crash course at the start of the trek which covers the basics of riding.

New Trek....

45 min led trek. Feel as if you are on top of the world without having to control your horse as your guide leads you over farmland and through bush to one of the highest points on the farm with mountain views on a clear day. Don’t forget you camera. Ages 8+. Also suitable for people who speak little English as your guide will be in control of your horse. $60pp

All other treks are available as led treks for one person aged 12+.
